What the Heck are Air Cooled Heat Exchangers?

Air cooled heat exchangers, are used to cool a hot fluid using cool ambient air. The hot fluid is passed through the heat exchanger & cool ambient air is used to cool it down. The ambient air drawn in from the environment by using a fan. The fans are usually driven by an electric motor. Typically in industrial application the fan motor is AC (single or three phase), whereas in mobile or vehicle-mounted applications these fans run on a battery & usually are 12V or 24V DC operated. These coolers are known by various names in the industry – fin fan heat exchangers, fan cooled heat exchangers, plate fin heat exchangers etc.

Typical application areas are where water is either not available, quality of water is poor or it is desired to save water due to environmental concerns. Also air cooled heat-exchangers are simpler to use as there is no need to provide a pump, plumbing for water, cooling towers or water chillers. This helps in reducing cost of operation & ease of maintenance.
